ADDITIONAL TOOLS
Practice Quizzes--At the end of each chapter, there are “Check Your Knowledge” quizzes that include a combination of 20–30 multiple choice, true/false, matching, and short answer essay questions. Unit 2, “Wine and Food Compatibility,” offers several worksheets at the end of each chapter to assist the learner with gaining a solid understanding and practice of pairing guidelines and principles.
Key Words--These terms have been set in italics throughout each chapter within the book. Most words can also be found in the Glossary for quick reference if a definition or pronunciation is needed.
Colorful Maps--Maps of key grape/wine production areas help to illustrate terroir in a general sense. Certainly, it is helpful to have a sense of place, particularly an understanding of where regions or countries are in relation to one another. Each winemaking region has its own character and heritage, and its wines represent both the unique properties of the land and local winemaking practices. The climates and topographies within a country or even a wine region can vary dramatically, so knowing where the wine is made gives clues as to the grape varieties and flavors one can expect.
Pronunciation Guides and Glossary--Some wine terms can be challenging to articulate, because they are taken from French, Italian, German, or Spanish (or even, in some cases, from Portuguese or Hungarian). The first time a “foreign term” appears and is expanded upon within the text, a phonetic guide is included for English speakers. The guide provides an approximate pronunciation in English and does not necessarily reflect the nuances or specific dialects that may be apparent with the use of these terms in the country or wine region of origin. Certainly, a French word will sound best as said by a French-speaking person, but the guides provide a close approximation that would be acceptable to use throughout the world.
Vocabulary that is used throughout the book is summarized in a Glossary at the back of the book. The reader is encouraged to reference the Glossary throughout the text upon encountering a term whose meaning he or she does not know. Unit 4, “Wines of the Old World,” presents easy-to-locate wine bottle labeling terminology at the beginning of each chapter.
